Manchester City and Leipzig only needed four matchdays to secure their qualification for the Champions League round of 16. Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys, with only one point each in Group G, could do nothing.
Against the Swiss team, the Cityzens could rely on their serial scorer Erling Haaland who scored his 38th and 39th goals… in 34 Champions League matches, as well as on Phil Foden to make the difference and easily win 3-0. Jérémy Doku, unstoppable last weekend with a goal and four assists against Bournemouth, came on for the last ten minutes. It is also worth noting the presence of another Belgian on the pitch… Erik Lambrechts who refereed his first Champions League match.
Meanwhile, Leipzig won in Serbia thanks to their magical duo Xavi Simons – Loïs Apenda. The Dutchman opened the scoring with a superb curled shot with his right foot (0-1, 8′) and in the last quarter of an hour, the Belgian made it two (0-2, 77′), scoring his second goal in the most prestigious of European competitions. The late goal for the hosts (an own goal by Henrichs in the 82nd minute) did not change the Serbian defeat (1-2).
With 12 and 9 points respectively, Manchester City and Leipzig are already qualified for the next round.
