– La Suisse est couverte de poussières du Sahara
Une quantité record de 180’000 tonnes de sable a été transportée du Sahara. Cela a un impact sur l’environnement et la météo.
Une quantité exceptionnelle de poussières de sable du Sahara est arrivée samedi au-dessus de la Suisse. Elle a atteint environ 180’000 tonnes, selon les modèles de calcul utilisés, a déclaré le météorologue Roman Brogli de SRF Meteo à la radio.
Selon M. Brogli, il s’agit d’une quantité exceptionnellement élevée, les événements récents de ce type n’ayant apporté que la moitié de ce volume en Suisse. Déjà vendredi, un fort courant du sud avait transporté le sable du Sahara du nord de l’Afrique vers la Suisse.
Le Sahara est la plus grande source de poussières minérales, libérant entre 60 et 200 millions de tonnes par an. Alors que les particules plus grosses retombent rapidement au sol, les plus petites peuvent être transportées sur de longues distances et atteindre toute l’Europe. Les épisodes de sable du Sahara contribuent de manière significative à la charge en aérosols au printemps et en automne.
Ralentissement des skieurs
Lorsque cette poussière est en suspension dans l’air, elle réfléchit et diffuse une partie de la lumière du soleil. Le ciel prend alors une teinte jaunâtre et les levers et couchers de soleil sont plus spectaculaires. S’il se dépose sur la neige, il peut ralentir les skieurs.
Les particules de poussière dans l’air représentent un facteur d’incertitude supplémentaire pour les prévisions météorologiques. Elles peuvent également favoriser la formation de nuages. Pour la nature, les minéraux contenus dans ces poussières constituent un bon engrais.
Impact sur la santé
Le sable du Sahara, qui ne reste que temporairement, ne devrait avoir qu’une influence négligeable sur la santé de la grande majorité des personnes. En effet, la poussière fine naturelle ne représente qu’environ 1% de la concentration totale d’autres particules fines.
Avec plus de neuf millions de kilomètres carrés, le Sahara est le plus grand désert aride de la planète. Il est aussi grand que les États-Unis et s’étend en Afrique de la côte atlantique à la côte de la mer Rouge.
