Baldur’s Gate 3 has already a considerable content, but the studio has not yet revealed everything and could reserve some nice surprises for the future. Here’s what we know so far.
When Baldur’s Gate 3 left early access and was launched in August, Larian Studios celebrated the event by adding two new species: the dragonborns and the half-orcs. But Dungeons and Dragons offers so many possibilities that it was inevitable that some species were left out. Fortunately, Larian doesn’t completely close the door…
Baldur’s Gate 3 and the new species
Adam Smith, writing director at Larian Studios, said during a Twitch stream “We haven’t stopped updating the game. We will continue to do so […] We don’t have specific plans for new races right now, but we’re not saying no.“
Smith also mentioned that many ideas were not included because they didn’t fit the campaign or the story that the studio wanted to tell. However, some could be considered later. So, without going out on a limb, we can imagine new races arriving in the future.
Faerûn, the world where the Sword Coast is located, is full of species that Larian could potentially use in the future. Among them, goblins and aasimars. Other species, like aarakocra, winged bird-men, or yuan-ti, slithering snakes, could also be considered. The Dungeons and Dragons universe is almost endless and continues to evolve over time.
A popularity story
The most popular species, according to Larian, are the half-elf, human and elf, with the githyanki as the least appreciated race. The choice of species opens the door to unique dialogue options. For those who don’t want to wait for Larian to add other species, modders have already expanded the character creation menu. One mod, called Fantastical Multiverse, adds 54 species to the game, from the 5th edition of D&D and One D&D. And others are yet to come in the future on this Baldur’s Gate 3 mod.
This free mod offers a variety of races such as Goblins, Kobolds or Goliaths, as well as species from Final Fantasy 14. MMORPG enthusiasts, (like the creator of the mod), will have the opportunity to play characters like a Hyur, an Elezen, a Roegadyn or a Garlean. In another genre, there’s the Fellowship of the Ring mod that adds Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merry, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Aragorn and Gandalf. And so the opportunity to play a chubby hobbit villain.
