21.3% of households in Luxembourg indicated having difficulty making the necessary budget to make ends meet, according to the results of a survey conducted by Statec and revealed on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the finding is not surprising and has already been discussed recently, but this survey confirms the trend that material deprivations are still strong for some of the country’s inhabitants.

Inflation has reversed the average growth in household income, estimated at €4,162 per person per month in 2021, while the poverty risk threshold is estimated at €2,265. “Households with dependent children are those who feel the worst about their financial situation,” writes the report, which was conducted over three months with 4,000 households.

Single adults with at least one dependent child are the ones who struggle the most to make ends meet, more than one in three (35.5%). A similar rate for a household of two adults with three or more dependent children (30.6%).

3.7% of people struggle to pay their bills

To illustrate, Statec notes that “in 2022, 19% of households in Luxembourg reported being unable to cope with an unexpected expense of €1,900 from their own resources.” And situations of giving up on certain goods or activities due to budget are another lesson from the survey. 2.1% of the population face overdue rent payments, and 3.7% struggle to pay their bills. 17.5% of residents also consider the burden of loans or credits to be too high each month.

Among households having difficulty making ends meet, Statec notes that “more than half” could not replace a worn-out piece of furniture, “more than one-third” could not afford a week of vacation away from home, and “10%” gave up the idea of regularly buying meat or fish. The poverty risk rate now reaches 17.3% of the population in Luxembourg.
