Éclair : la bonne surprise d’Ezra Miller dans le rôle de Flash

Ezra Miller embodies an efficient and friendly Flash in this highly entertaining film by Andrés Muschietti.

The curse that seemed to weigh on Warner Bros. and DC Comics films is lifted with this fast-paced and fun Flash.

We were eagerly awaiting this Flash. First, because of the scandals and controversies surrounding Ezra Miller, then because the studios failed with the indigestible Black Adam and the horrible Shazam! Fury of the Gods, two resounding flops – and disappointments.

The good surprise is therefore there from the first minutes of Flash. The opening scene, with humor that some may find questionable, is obviously designed to become a machine for memes, those funny images or animations that circulate on social networks.

Whatever one may think of Ezra Miller’s personal journey, it must be acknowledged: he is an excellent Flash. Without revealing too much detail of Christina Hodson’s (Bumblebee) screenplay, Barry Allen goes back in time to try to prevent his mother’s death, thus encountering different iterations of Batman – all inspired versions of the Dark Knight -, a menacing General Zod (Michael Shannon), and a dynamic Supergirl (Sasha Calle), as well as a number of characters from the DC cinematic universe who are showcased here.

At 144 minutes, one might think, as is usually the case, that this superhero blockbuster is dragging on for no reason. Fortunately, that’s not the case. The screenplay has enough twists, humor, surprises, and is accompanied by enough interesting special effects (despite some flaws, particularly in the editing) to never bore – note the effects of Flash’s first accelerations, which resemble beautiful spiraling flames.

If the script has escaped the appalling heaviness and interstellar emptiness that characterize Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the direction and creativity do not reach the level of the dazzling Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Nevertheless, in these months of summer sweetness, punctuated weekly by the releases of Hollywood’s large-scale films, Flash is a breath of freshness and color, with no other pretension than to entertain. And for a DC film, that’s already not so bad.
