Former Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard Joins Vision Marine Technologies Board of Directors, Announcement in English Raises Concerns

Joint by Le Journal, Mr. Couillard did not appear particularly surprised by the unilingualism of the announcement of his appointment. “I think it’s something [the presence of French] that they know [the leaders of Vision Marine] they need to improve. I’m not aware of the details,” he said. “The electrification of transportation is important in the energy transition, particularly in the boating sector,” he continued. “There are many opportunities currently and it’s exciting to see a Quebec-based company in this sector.” Accustomed to English Since its listing on the American Nasdaq exchange at the end of 2020, Vision Marine has published almost all of its press releases and financial documents in English. “Mr. Couillard’s announcement was made in English only via news wires, as the English language is a requirement and the only language of communication for companies listed on Nasdaq,” the company clarified in an email sent to Le Journal. English was also used in June 2021 when Vision Marine announced it had received a $1.7 million grant from the Ministry of Economy.
