“Let the federal government mind its own business!”
That’s what Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette said when asked about the English-Montreal school board’s decision to challenge the State Secularism Law with federal funds.
It was a pleasure to hear!
Especially coming from him!
Finally, the CAQ showing some teeth!
Instead of groveling before Ottawa, with a soft hat in hand and tears in the eyes, like Puss in Boots!
LAUGHTER WITH AN “R”
Now that Mr. Jolin-Barrette has put the federal government in its place, what’s next?
What will be the consequences if Ottawa continues to meddle in our affairs?
Um… Well…
That’s the Achilles’ heel of the Legault government.
They get mad, and then…
Nothing.
- Listen to the political column with Jean-François Lisée via VIEUX:
“Damn it all, the chopsticks in the air, but from behind, we take our hole,” as Ferland sang.
We play our Boubou.
“Quebec is and will be a distinct society, a society that will make its own choices,” declared the Justice Minister, citing the famous speech Robert Bourassa made the day after the death of Meech.
That’s all well and good.
Except that the complete sentence of Mr. Bourassa’s speech is: “A distinct society, FREE and capable of ASSUMING ITS DESTINY…”
Why did Mr. Jolin-Barrette leave out these few words? Did he forget them?
It’s possible.
But it’s also possible that he didn’t say them because those words sounded too much like a sovereigntist threat, which would have angered his boss, François Legault.
Because at the CAQ, they get mad, but they never brandish the sovereigntist stick to scare the federal adversary.
When they mention the R word (referendum), they always make sure it’s followed by the word “sectorial” to not scare off the federalists who sought refuge under the CAQ when the PLQ collapsed.
After all, we are nationalists in the CAQ.
Not separatists!
TOGETHER BUT NOT TOGETHER
In fact, what the CAQ wants is to be “an independent Quebec in a united Canada.”
To have all the power, to enjoy our complete and total freedom, without divorcing from Canada.
It reminds me of a friend of mine who had the “brilliant” idea to try an “open” relationship with his wife.
He wanted all the benefits of marriage (security, stability, never being alone, dual incomes) without the downsides (monogamy, fidelity, being accountable).
And all the benefits of being single (wild life, freedom to sleep with anyone, freedom) without the downsides (loneliness, coming back empty-handed from the bar at 3 AM).
“The best of both worlds!” he said, smiling.
In a relationship BUT independent!
It lasted two months.
He realized that an “open” relationship may sound good on paper, but it doesn’t work in practice.
It always breaks down.
That’s what the Legault government is proposing: an “open” relationship with Canada.
Together, but not really together.
We will each “respect” the other’s freedom.
Good luck, CAQ friends!
If you want, I can give you my friend’s phone number, you can talk to him.
He’s separated.
And happier than ever.

RACIST AND SEXIST?
According to the League of Human Rights, Bill 21 is racist and sexist.
How is this law racist? A religion is not a race given at birth, but an idea to which one is free to subscribe or not!
As for the second accusation: what’s more sexist? A law that prevents teachers from wearing religious symbols at work, or a religious concept that requires all women and girls to wear a veil and cover their bodies?
