La perte de mémoire et la maladie d’Alzheimer : les pistes de réflexion du neurologue Jean-François Démonet

Jean-François Démonet, neurologue, professeur at the Lausanne University Hospital and emeritus research director at Inserm, recently led a conference on the theme of memory loss in the context of Alzheimer’s disease at the invitation of the Pluridisciplinary Health Center Les Serènes. During his presentation, he emphasized how “memory contents are of very varied nature, and we remember things other than words or texts, even if verbal memory is particularly valued in our society. When the word is on the tip of the tongue or forgetfulness suddenly surprises us, concerns may arise; some reflections will be given on brain aging and on certain strategies that can be used daily to prevent the consequences of this aging.”

Regarding Alzheimer’s disease, the neurologist already noted in 2020 in the newspaper “Le Temps,” “what emerges from research is that today we know that Alzheimer’s is not just a problem for the elderly. It is a chronic disease like diabetes or hypertension and that changes the game. Perhaps the failure of previous drug trials is linked to the fact that the people tested were already too affected or had diseases other than Alzheimer’s. If we detect the disease earlier, we can also hope that we will have better chances of countering it. Efforts are now moving in this direction, even if, of course, we must also work in parallel on solutions to improve the quality of life of elderly people affected.” There is a problem when a person suffers from memory problems without being aware of it. Loved ones are often the first to worry, noticing changes in behavior. Here are the signals that should prompt a visit to a specialist. Illustrations, interactive exchanges allowed everyone to find answers to their questions and dispel their doubts.
