According to Le Nouvelliste, the Trois-Rivières Lions will be able to finish their regular season. The league will assume ownership of the franchise.
The ECHL governors made this decision this afternoon.
However, the Newfoundland Growlers are ceasing operations.
There are still seven games left in the season and the Lions are fighting for a playoff spot.
According to Le Nouvelliste, the other teams in the league would be responsible for the expenses related to the Lions if they participate in the playoffs.
Trois-Rivières will face the Maine Mariners on Wednesday at the Colisée Vidéotron.
The company Deacon Sports and Entertainment (DSE) owned both the Lions and the Growlers.
A group has expressed interest in acquiring the team in recent days.
The City of Trois-Rivières has managed to recover $650,000 in unpaid rent.
The end of the Growlers
The Newfoundland Growlers no longer exist as of today.
Dean MacDonald, president of Deacon Sports and Entertainment, stated that players under contract with the AHL will continue to play with the Toronto Marlies or their season will end. Those under ECHL contract are now unrestricted free agents without compensation.
MacDonald added that an offer for the sale of the Growlers and Lions was presented, but the offer was declined and only the Lions were saved.
