Connor Hellebuyck made 38 saves and Mark Scheifele scored the overtime winner to help the Winnipeg Jets secure a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.
However, the Oilers may have lost more than just the game in this matchup against the Jets. Connor McDavid was unable to play the last 4 minutes after a collision on the ice. In conversation with one of the team’s trainers, McDavid seemed to be clutching his left leg. He remained on the bench but was unable to jump onto the ice in overtime.
Edmonton had started this game off strong. Darnell Nurse opened the scoring just 85 seconds into the game. McDavid and Leon Draisaitl assisted on Nurse’s first goal of the season.
The Oilers’ power play got going less than five minutes later when Evan Bouchard also scored his first goal of the season with a powerful slap shot. McDavid and Draisaitl once again contributed to the Oilers’ goal.
The Jets’ special teams then lent a hand to Hellebuyck. Josh Morrissey first narrowed the gap with a power play goal from a solid slap shot.
Vladislav Namestnikov then did some good work deep in the territory during a penalty kill and allowed the Jets to tie the game with his first goal of the season.
Scheifele gave the Jets the victory by skillfully redirecting Morrissey’s pass behind Stuart Skinner. The Oilers’ goalie made 24 saves and is still searching for his first win of the season.
After the game, McDavid did not meet with the media. Team head coach Jay Woodcroft did not want to elaborate further on the health status of his captain. The Oilers will play their next game on Tuesday against the Wild.
