Was Batshuayi hindered by a lack of discipline? When he was younger, he was definitely not the most punctual, according to Marc Wilmots: “Yes, there were definitely some discipline issues, but I think now it’s resolved with time. Maybe he struggles to perform consistently throughout a season. He started off really well at Dortmund, then he got injured and had a little dip. And because he belonged to Chelsea, he would leave, he would come back. He never found the club where he felt comfortable, for him and his family… There are many unknown factors. What we do know is that he is a great scorer, a good scorer.“
Was he late for training? “Yes, he was late. It’s not a problem, but there’s a way to handle it. For me, it was very simple, I didn’t select him once. In September, he comes, he arrives late three or four times in ten days, I don’t select him in October, but I select him in November. I just told him ‘do you understand now?’ and then he was there fifteen minutes early every time on the bus. He understood, it was over. An example, and it was settled.“
Was he the only one? “No, no, but you have to understand that if clubs let him do whatever he wanted when he was young, it was no longer the case in the national team. So he had to follow the rules, like everyone else. It’s a matter of respect towards others, towards the staff.“
