Marquinhos sur le point de battre un record au PSG : un départ en apothéose attendu

Barring any surprises, Marquinhos will become, on Wednesday against Barcelona, the player who has worn the Paris Saint-Germain shirt the most frequently. His departure will not be insignificant.

Arriving for 31 million euros at PSG on July 19, 2013, at the age of 18, the Brazilian defender who had just come from a single season at AS Roma probably did not imagine that eleven years later he was about to make history for the capital club. Saturday night, coming on as a substitute against Clermont in the second half, Marquinhos played his 435th match in the Paris Saint-Germain jersey, thus joining Jean-Marc Pilorget, who was also a defender for PSG but between 1975 and 1989. And there is no doubt that the Brazilian international will be at the top of this ranking on Wednesday evening at the Parc des Princes at the start of the Champions League quarter-final between PSG and FC Barcelona. Although he has experienced good and bad times in Paris, Marquinos, under Luis Enrique’s captaincy, is therefore set to become a legend. And Jean-Marc Pilorget is happy to make way for such a player.

At 65 years old, the French defender has no problem seeing Marquinhos move ahead of him in the ranking of the most capped PSG players, even though his career was on hold for a year and a half after a serious road accident. “It had to happen! I wouldn’t have had this thought a decade ago. But when I saw Marquinhos’ career, it was clear to me that he would eventually approach this milestone and succeed in beating my record (…) I am proud to see him at the top of this hierarchy of players who have played the most games for PSG. I am happy that a guy like him achieves this great feat,” notes Jean-Marc Pilorget, in Le Parisien.

Marquinhos will leave on a high note

And even though Marquinhos still has four years left on his contract with the French champions, the former player knows when the 29-year-old Brazilian will pack his bags: “I was told that he played his first match with PSG in the Champions League, against Olympiakos (September 17, 2013), and he scored that day. So, when we recently met, I told him: I believe your last match with PSG will be in the Champions League final, and you will score the winning goal. And there, you can leave with your head held high.” There is no doubt that from Nasser Al-Khelaifi’s perspective, seeing Marquinhos finish like this in Paris would be exciting.
