Commençons par une vérité indéniable – Renault, a respected name in the automotive industry, is now under fire. An impressive group of 1789 dissatisfied customers filed a collective complaint against Renault, the French automotive giant, accusing the company of producing defective engines.
The problem in question is an oil overconsumption that has been observed in certain cars. This overconsumption can cause engine degradation, resulting in higher maintenance costs and increased pollution. Furthermore, in some cases, it has caused engine failure between 65,000 and 125,000 kilometers.
An Oil Overconsumption: A Major Problem
The dilemma has been compounded with vehicles equipped with 1.2 TCe petrol engines, manufactured by Renault between October 2012 and June 2016. These engines were installed not only in the Renault range – including the Clio, Megane, and Kangoo – but also in Dacia models, the Mercedes Citan, and some Nissan vehicles equipped with the 1.2 DIG-T engine. In France, about 133,000 vehicles were equipped with this type of engine, which amplified the scale of the problem.
However, this is not the first time this problem has been reported. The consumer association UFC-Que choisir had already raised the alarm in 2019 about these engines. They suggested that up to 400,000 vehicles in France could be affected, and other cases have been reported elsewhere in Europe.
Time for Justice for Renault?
The complaint, filed in the criminal court of Nanterre, is full of accusations. The motives stated are “aggravated deception, misleading commercial practices, fraud, destruction, damage and dangerous deterioration for persons,” and “endangering the lives of others.” It is clear that these allegations put Renault in a difficult position, and the respected brand will have a lot to do to regain the trust of its customers.
