Reolink lance la technologie ColorX pour améliorer la vision nocturne en couleur de ses caméras de sécurité extérieures.

ColorX is the name of the technology that Reolink promises will “surpass the limits of darkness”. It will be integrated into cameras from the same brand in order to improve color reproduction at night. Like most cameras launched on the market with the promise of color night vision, ColorX should rely on one or more integrated projectors. This seems slightly less innovative than the technology on board the Ezviz C3X, but other elements come into play.

Projectors, a large aperture, and a large sensor

These projectors should deliver warm light (3000 K), thus less dazzling than the projectors usually used for color night vision. Reolink adds that they will turn on gradually to limit “light pollution and interference for neighbors.”

To function, ColorX also requires optics that let in a lot of light, as well as a sensor with large pixels. An f/1 aperture and a 4Mpx 1/1.8-inch sensor have been selected and should be found on all ColorX-labeled cameras, at least initially. One can imagine future evolutions, especially to keep up with the market as it gradually moves towards 8-Mpx sensors for 4K video.

A flattering first look with the CX410

The first ColorX camera relies on this configuration. It is the CX410, and it must be recognized that the images chosen by Reolink to illustrate its low-light capabilities are flattering. They show a flower-filled courtyard with relatively vivid colors and very little noise, but we would have liked to see the same scene captured without ColorX to compare. We know the photos were taken at 9:00 PM, but without a date or location. Hence, it is difficult to imagine the ambient brightness.

For the rest, the ColorX CX410 is fairly standard, except for its smart detection system, which should be able to differentiate between pets and vehicles, in addition to humans, to limit false alarms. Designed for outdoor use, it is naturally protected against rain (IP66), and Reolink allows for the use of only an Ethernet cable for connection and power (PoE). There is no wifi or battery here. Finally, we note the presence of an SD card slot for storing recordings locally, knowing that Reolink launched a cloud offer in France in 2022.

The ColorX CX410 camera is available for pre-order at the preferential price of €108, but it will be launched at the recommended retail price of €120.
